80. Aniversary of giving a witness about concentration camps Auschwitz and Birkenau by Alfréd Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba
Coin design for a public contest by the Slovak National Bank
The aim of the design was to sensitively yet unequivocally depict the oppression of the Jewish population, a topic effectively brought to the world's attention by Wetzler and Vrba. The barbed wire, forming the shape of the Star of David, binds the trio of heads, rendering them voiceless (averse). On the other side, the barbed wire continues to entangle an even larger group of people. Two missing figures, running towards the broken wire, symbolize hope for liberation and a future (reverse).
